PURPOSE: To provide a character input use GUI for a retrieval processing with excellent operability even on a small display screen without using a keyboard. CONSTITUTION: The positions of a display window 132 on a page bar 131 and the display window 135 on the page bar 134 displayed in a page bar display area 121 are changed by the operation of a user. Characters to be displayed in the display window 132 and the display window 135 are decided by the positions of the respective display windows and the result of forward direction matching retrieval is displayed in a pertinent item display area 122 and a text display area on the basis of the displayed characters. By changing the position of a cursor 133 on the page bar 136 displayed after the selection of two characters is established, the user displays a desired item and a corresponding text among words starting with the established two characters.
