994,356. Injection and extrusion moulding machines. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., and GENERAL ENGINEERING CO. (RADCLIFFE) Ltd. Sept. 21, 1961 [Oct. 5, 1960], No. 34155/60. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B1] Apparatus for controlling the working temperature in machines, e.g. injection and extrusion moulding, of the kind in which plastic is forced along an electrically heated cylinder 1, includes tubular coils 4 for conveying a cooling medium which are wrapped helically around the cylinder 1 and are surrounded by a sleeve 5 over which electrical induction heating coils 2, 3 are fitted. In each of three axially spaced zones, three cooling coils 4 having inlets 4a and outlets 4b and formed with flattened surfaces adjacent the cylinder 1 are fed with water via valves 10 from a common head. Half-housings 6, 7 for the primary induction coils 2, 3 are clamped around the sleeve 5. An electrical control circuit is provided to automatically admit compressed air to the coils 4 for a predetermined time after closing the water valves 10, thereby to scavenge the coils 4. The housings 6, 7 and sleeve 5 may be of a non-magnetic material of a high electrical resistivity which may be a stainless steel and the coils 4 may be of " Inconel " (Registered Trade Mark).
