PURPOSE: A composition containing an extract of Plantago asiatica L. which has prevention and improvement effects on skin damage as a main component is provided which is useful as a skin agent for external use. CONSTITUTION: Plantago asiatica L. is ground and then extracted at a temperature of from room temperature to 60deg.C in water, ethanol, methanol, 1,3-butylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerine or a mixture thereof. In a mixed solvent of 1,3-butylene glycol, propylene glycol and distilled water, the mixing ratio of 1,3-butylene glycol to propylene glycol to distilled water is 8:2 to 4:6. The composition inhibiting the growth of acne bacteria contains 0.01 to 30% of the above extract.
