The invention relates to the use of preparations that are to be topically applied containing a) one compound or several compounds from the group consisting of carnitine and its precursors, derivatives and metabolites, b) optionally one compound or several compounds from the group of electrolytes c) optionally one compound or several compounds from the group of polyols and urea and optionally d) one compound or several compounds from the group of osmolytes, for treating and actively preventing dry skin and for reinforcing the barrier function of the skin. Said preparations are also used for the treatment, care and prophylaxis of sensitive skin and/or for the treatment and prophylaxis of the following symptoms of a negative alteration in the physiological homeostasis of healthy skin, in particular: defective, sensitive or hypo-active skin conditions or defective, sensitive or hypo-active conditions of the skin adnexa, inflammatory skin conditions, in addition to atopic eczema, polymorphic photodermatitis, psoriasis, vitiligo, sensitive, itching or irritated skin, alterations in normal lipid peroxidation, alteration in the ceramide, lipid and energy metabolism of healthy skin, alteration in the physiological transepidermal water loss, reduction of skin hydration and decrease in the moisture content of the skin, alteration in the natural moisturising factor content, decline in cell-cell communication, deficiency symptoms of intracellular DNA synthesis, DNA damage and reduction of endogenic DNA repair mechanisms, activation of metalloproteinases and/or other proteases, or inhibition of the corresponding endogenic DNA repair mechanisms, deviations from the normal post-translational modifications of connective tissue elements, alterations in the normal hyaluronic acid content and glucosaminoglycan content of healthy skin, desquamation of the hair and scalp and skin ageing.
