The arm rest (6) for a seat or chair (1) has, on its upper side (11), a surface (12) which can be used as a work or resting surface. At least one electric interface (14) is arranged at the end (16) of the arm rest. A cover element (15) is provided to cover the interface as desired. The cover can be brought into a position which leaves the interface at least partly free. Independent claims also cover the seat itself.
