PURPOSE: A system and a method for providing digest information of video data are provided to accurately retrieve the wanted video data through the digest information which the video data is summarized. CONSTITUTION: A system for providing digest information of video data includes an authoring tool server(10) manufacturing a video title list of a plurality of video data, editing digest information by video data corresponding to the video title list or extracting the digest information in response to a request signal; a preview encoder(20) providing a search menu for the video title list to an external device(40) connected to receive the video data, and appropriately arranging the digest information on a screen or reprocessing the digest information into a format appropriate for streaming according as search is requested; and a stream server(30) transmitting the extracted video title list and the digest information to the external device if an output request signal for the digest information is inputted from the external device.
