The method involves measuring the air pressure in the individual system components (40,50) with a pressure sensor, measuring the ambient temperature with a sensor (63) mounted on the vehicle, deriving the current air mass in the system from the measured pressures, temperature and vehicle level. A desired air mass is derived from the level, ambient temperature and a derived maximum level variation.
