An hydraulic jet propulsion apparatus of the kind including an impeller 4 which draws in water at 3 and discharges it at 7 as a jet has one or more auxiliary ducts, e.g. 14 and 15, capable of discharging water in a different direction from the main passage 7. A vane 9 is pivotally mounted in the passage 7 so that it can be moved from either of two extreme positions in which it substantially closes the passage 7 and one duct and deflects the water through the other duct. In Fig. 2 it is deflecting through the duct 14 to a position in which its cross-section offers a minimum of resistance to the flow through the main passage 7. The passage 7 is provided with pivoted vanes 8 which are controlled by a lever 16 on the transom bracket 2. A similar lever 17 controls the vane 9. The vane 9 may have a plane or concave jet engaging surface. The vane 9 may also be disposed near the outlet of the main passage 7 to control the direction of the main jet. In the embodiment having only one duct it is of sufficient size to allow the jet to pass in accordance with the angular position of the vane.</p> |
