The fuel cell has a voltage converter (75) between two electrically conducting end plates (56,86) and electrically connected to each in a first region (61,91), which is locally isolated from a second region of the end plates (60,90) with a direct electrical connection to an electrolyte/electrode unit (70,71) and contact with chemical reactants. The two regions of the end plates are separated by seals (50).
