A tram is driven from a flywheel rotating about a vertical axis in a housing 16 in a central well 14 of the tram chassis. The flywheel is supplied with energy by a prime mover when required, an electric motor 38 powered by fuel cells 40 or an internal combustion engine, e.g. using LPG as fuel, and is driven by the vehicle to store energy during deceleration of the vehicle. The flywheel may drive (and be driven by) the tram wheels 10 through a hydrostatic transmission having a variable-displacement pump 22 and a motor 24. |
