The invention provides the substantially geometrically and optically pure trans-steroisomeric form of a compound of for- mula (1), wherein R1 is H or C1-C4 alkyl, together with processes for its preparation. The compounds are intermediates for the preparation of the antidepressant agent known as sertraline.
