PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer in which the data of the residual quantity of ink or the like can be rewritten surely even if a memory element having a small number of rewritable times is mounted on an ink cartridge, and an ink cartridge for use in the printer. SOLUTION: In the printer 1, sequential access type memory elements 80 are mounted on ink cartridges 107K and 107F and an EEPROM having a small number of rewritable times is employed. The print controller 40 of the printer 1 also comprises a memory for storing data concerning to the ink cartridges and the data of the residual quantity of ink is stored in both memories. An EEPROM or a DRAM may be employed as the memory on the printer 1 side. Data is written in the EEPROM 90 every time when the residual quantity of ink is calculated and data is written in the memory cell 81 of the memory element 80 only when a power down instruction is delivered. Since the writing frequency of the memory element 80 becomes lower than the writing frequency of the EEPROM 9, both the reliability of data and the limit number of rewritable times can be satisfied. |
