PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for managing the liquid level of a suction type tank-shaped membrane separation apparatus or an immersion type membrane separation apparatus so that trouble is prevented in the filtration operation of the apparatus, the recovery rate deterioration is prevented and a tank to be used in the apparatus is made compact. SOLUTION: The membrane separation apparatus has a membrane module disposed in the liquid phase of the tank whose upper end face is opened and a means for withdrawing the filtrate filtered through the membrane module to the outside of the tank by using sucking force or water head difference as driving force. This method for managing the liquid level of the membrane separation apparatus is carried out by using a level meter where the specific gravity of the water to be treated in the tank is used as a parameter, automatically controlling the level meter by a liquid level managing program and automatically controlling the amount of the liquid to be supplied to the tank.
