PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer in which printable state can be brought about quickly without performing useless printing even when printing is started from a state where the print head is cooled down. SOLUTION: The thermal printer comprises means for detecting the environmental temperature of a print head, means for deciding whether the environmental temperature is lower than a specified level or not, an alarm means being actuated when a decision is made that the environmental temperature is lower than the specified level, and means for passing a thermal sheet printed once by means of a print head again through the print head when the alarm means is actuated and permitting overlap printing of the same image at the same position of the same thermal sheet.
