发明名称 Adjustable engine brake
摘要 1,002,475. Regulating I.C. engines; I.C. engine braking. F. FINGER. April 9, 1963 [April 19, 1962], No. 14078/63. Headings FIB and F1K. [Also in Division B7] An I.C. engine brake valve which allows the charge to escape from each cylinder during the compression stroke is adapted to be inserted into an opening for a spark or glow plug provided in the cylinder head 3, Fig. 1, and to receive a spark or glow plug 1. The brake valve is brought into operation by rotating a cable pulley 32 connected to tubular member 29 against the action of spring 23 to rotate control ring 19 until it engages in corresponding recesses in stationary control ring 20. Pressure rise in the cylinder causes bushing 7 to rise off the valve seat 4 and then annular piston 10 to rise against the action of spring 11 allowing the charge to exhaust through the gaps between bars 12, ports 14 and into an exhaust receiver and silencer 36, acted on by spring 38 and thence to atmosphere. Pulley 32 carries a Bowden cable 39 and housings 22 and 49 are locked together by spring-loaded pin 25. The spark plug electrodes 2 are removable. Figure 6. When the vehicle accelerator pedal 66 is pivoted in direction of arrow 86 beyond a neutral position arm 51b is pivoted to cause valve 50 to connect an air intake pipe 55 with a pipe 56 leading to a vacuum servo means which actuates the engine brake. When clutch pedal 60 is depressed projection 61 pivots arm 51a to connect pipe 56 with pipe 54 leading to the outside thus causing the vacuum servo means to return to its neutral position. Simultaneously with actuation of the bell crank a Bowden cable 58 actuates a switch to break the connection to the primary circuit of the ignition or in a modification the Bowden cable may control the brake valve directly. In another embodiment the oil pressure line for the normal vehicle brakes is tapped off to operate the engine brake through a hydraulic cylinder. Figure 9. When knob 110 draws the Bowden cable in the direction of arrow 111, valve 94 closes opening 93. Outlet 98 is connected to the engine air intake duct through a valve (not shown) so that a vacuum is produced in chamber 92 whereby diaphragm 91 and part 95 connected by cable 96 to the pulley 32 are moved in the direction of arrow 97, the braking effect thus being variable in dependence on the setting of knob 110. In a modification the knob is replaced by a hand lever provided with a ratchet means. The servo means may consist of an electric motor or may be vacuum-controlled or controlled by oil or pneumatic pressure or adjusted directly by electrical controls. In a further modification, a by-pass valve, controlled conjointly with the engine brake, is inserted in the air intake duct of a carburetter engine and operates to by-pass air round the carburetter during engine braking, thus cutting off the fuel supply.
