PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic detection element that can suppress side reading. SOLUTION: A bottom surface is provided in a non-magnetic intermediate layer 16 through a second antiferromagnetic layer 18, a recess 21 where width dimension in the track-width direction of the bottom surface is equal to the track width dimensions is formed. Merely at a portion overlapping with a bottom surface 21b at the recess 21, the magnetization direction of a free magnetic layer 15 can be changed.
