During the charge and discharge phases the battery temperature (T) is measured and compared with characteristic fields which contain battery temperature as a supplementary variable. To determine the battery voltage (UBij+1) the fall in voltage of the battery during a time period is taken into account. The initial value (SOC) is determined by measuring the battery's voltage (UEL) on passing from discharge to charge using the function SOC = f(UEL, T). Method for determining the charge state of a lead acid battery, by measuring its voltage and comparing it with predetermined characteristic fields. In each charge phase the battery voltage (UBi) and charge period (tLi) is determined and by comparison with the characteristic delta Qi = f(SOC,tl,UB) the charge increase is determined. In a discharge phase following measurement of battery voltage (UBi) at certain time intervals, from the voltage 9UBij) at the start of a time interval, using a supposed current value (IBij) the battery voltage (UBij+1) is determined at the end of the time interval by comparison with field characteristics UB = f(IB,Ri,SOC) and from the deviation of the value thus obtained for (UBij+1) and for the battery voltage measured at the end of the time interval, the current value (IBij+1) is determined by iteration, corrected, and from this value the loss of charge is calculated.
