PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an organic EL element that is capable of emitting light at a low voltage and has a high sensitivity and stability. SOLUTION: In an organic EL element in which a positive electrode, a luminous layer, and a negative electrode are formed in this order on a substrate, an electron barrier layer made of a specific alkaline metal-containing pyridine derivative is comprised between the luminous layer and the negative electrode.
