The procedure consists of pre-assembling a rear body module (20) comprising a support (2), light assemblies (3), a fender bar and fender (4), and then fitting the assembled module to the rear end of the vehicle chassis. The module includes a foam shock absorber behind the fender bar, covering virtually the full height of the fender, and a trim skin over it. Its support (2) is in the form of a panel with a cavity (8) for a spare wheel holder. The module can be pre-assembled at one site and then transported to another site for fitting to the vehicle body.
