PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which can apply a regularly arranged ellipse to a dot train picked up from the nearly elliptic outline of an object. SOLUTION: Several points on the nearly elliptic outline are picked up as coordinates to obtain the dot train xi, yi} (i=1,2,...,(n), etc., where (n) is a positive integer) of a coordinate display of x-y plane and a dot train approximating method for approximately extracting an ellipse from the dot train is used applied with respect to the obtained dot train to obtain an ellipse; and the dot train approximating method shifts coordinates (x, y) on a plane to coordinates (x2 , y2 , x y, 1) in a five-dimensional space to move the dot train on the plane to the dot train in the five-dimensional space and characteristic vectors of a matrix M generated from a matrix D consisting of the coordinate values of the obtained dot train and a restraint matrix C consisting of constants are found. Then a proper characteristic vectors is selected from the found characteristic vectors to obtain an ellipse which has the vector (a, b, c d, e) and is expressed by ax2 +by2 +cx+dy+e=0, where ab>0.
