PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read documents comprising mixed black/white and color originals at a high-speed in an image reader that reads the documents fed by an ADF(automatic document feeder). SOLUTION: The image reader comprises an optical read means placed at a prescribed read position under a platen to read documents on the platen, a carrying means that can feed again the same document to the read position, an identification means that identifies the type of image data of the document read by the optical read means, and a control means that controls each means above. The control means discharges the document when the image data are of a 1st type and outputs the first image data in a 1st read mode, or feeds the document again to the read position when the image data are of a 2nd type to read the document in a 2nd read mode different from the 1st read mode as its control.
