PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an on-screen display device capable of realizing to rewrite, move specific information on a still picture, and switch it between displaying and non-displaying thereof speedily and with low power consumption, and also capable of displaying the specific information on the still picture at the same time. SOLUTION: The on-screen display device comprises display data memory 2 (12) for storing only background picture data, and display data memory 2 (13) for storing a composited picture data having composited the on-screen data, and it is possible to switch between displaying and non-displaying of the on-screen data on a display device 206 by selecting them by a selector 16. Moreover, when the displayed contents/position are altered, the background picture data are transferred from the display data memory 1 (12) to update the contents of the display data memory 2 (13). The background data can be stored and the picture data composited with the on-screen data can be stored without necessity for re-converting original picture data.
