PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for compressing and updating a BIOS(Basic I/O System) program that can reduce a read time of data, in the case of updating the BIOS program. SOLUTION: The compression method for the BIOS program will not totally compress the entire BIOS program but rather applies compression processing to each size being a greatest common multiple of a block size or each BIOS block unit (8 K bytes, as an example of a 4 M bit flash ROM) by means of Huffman coding, links data after the compression processing to a decrease the size of the program, after compression. With a personal computer, one has only to use a single algorithm for expanding the compressed program.
