Standardizing an algal extract or powder (A), containing active ingredients (I) that ensure binding of calcium by bone cells, with reference to the known activity of a predetermined amount of an agent (II) that promotes calcium binding, is new. A human or animal bone cell line is cultured in well plates, in complete medium, in presence of an (A) derived from Padina pavonica. The amount of calcium bound by the cells, in extracellular matrix (ECM), is determined in presence and absence of a calcium-binding antagonist (III), and the results are expressed in arbitrary units or in terms of the quantity of estradiol, present in (A). An Independent claim is also included for (A), derived from P. pavonia, and standardized by the new method.
