PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an IC card reader which is adaptive to use styles over a wide range. SOLUTION: A card holder 7 which holds an IC card 13 can be loaded in a data read part 3 of a reader writer main body 1; and the card holder 7 is not loaded in the data read part 3 for an application which communicates with the IC card 13 only momentarily during each use, but loaded in the data read part 3 for an application which possibly communicates with the IC card 13 repeatedly for a relatively long time during each use.
