PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium in which the in-plane orientation of a magnetic layer deposited can be improved. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium 100 having a magnetic layer 60 having an hcp structure deposited on an onset layer 50 having an hcp structure formed on a substrate 10, the onset layer 50 is formed in such a manner that the crystal commensuration between the onset layer 50 and the magnetic layer 60 is improved continuously or stepwise in the direction from the substrate 10 to the magnetic layer 60.
