PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original read method by which originals comprising mixed color originals and black/white originals are read at a high-speed by using an image reader provided with a carrying means to set the originals carried by a paper feed means to a prescribed position on a platen. SOLUTION: The image reader comprises a feed means that feeds originals on a paper feed tray, a carrying means that carries the original onto a platen, an optical read means that reads image data of the original on the platen under the platen, an identification means that identifies the type of image data of the original read by the optical read means, and a control means that controls each means above. The control means discharges the original when the image data are of a 1st type and outputs the first image data in a 1st read mode, or reads the original in a 2nd read mode different from the 1st read mode as its control when the image data are of a 2nd type.
