A transition metal carbide and/or nitride containing catalyst comprises an oxide base matrix and an interstitial transition metal compound in a mixing ratio of 0.1-10.0:1. A transition metal carbide and/or nitride containing catalyst (I) comprises: (A) an oxide base matrix of formula (I); and (B) an interstitial transition metal compound of formula (II) in a mixing ratio of (A) to (B) of 0.1-10.0:1. M(a)mXn (I) M(b)oYp (II) M(a) = Zn, Cd, Mn, Co, Fe, V or Al; M(b) = V, Cr, Mo, W; X = O or OOH; Y = C, N; m = 1-3; n = 1-5; o = 1 or 2; and p = 1. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of the catalyst (I) by mixing an aqueous suspension of the transition metal compound (B) with an aqueous solution of a salt of the metal component M(a), preferably a sulfate, chloride, nitrate or acetate followed by addition of an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate or potassium carbonate to result in a rapid precipitation such that M(b) is homogeneously distributed in the precipitate; washing until salt free and drying at 80-120 deg C followed by calcining at 300-500 deg C for 2-4 hours and forming.
