[Also in Division H1] A method of winding a ribbon electrical conductor on edge comprises rolling the conductor between tapering rollers which are spaced one from the other so that the major diameter of the rollers exerts pressure thereon to deform the conductor into a trapezoidal cross-sectional shape, thereby increasing the length of the outer edge thereof to an extent corresponding to the amount of decrease of the thickness of the outer edge, thereby to enable the conductor to be wound on edge without any stress thereon. The conductor ribbon e.g. 15 mm. x 0À25 mm. is drawn by a driven mandrel mounted on an axle 1, which may be driven by a torque motor, and wound thereon. The ribbon passes between a pair of motor-driven, adjustable, tapered rollers 2, 3 which deform it into a trapezoidal crosssection, Fig. 5. The ribbon is preferably initially produced by rolling flat, circular section material. Coils of a non-circular section may be formed, the rollers being brought together, e.g. by cam means to deform the conductor as it passes around a radiused portion of the mandrel. The roller head moves in a plane perpendicular to the width of the ribbon. When the ribbon has a width considerably greater than its thickness more than one set of rollers may be used.</p> |
