The invention relates to a method for sealing the cut edges that are produced when filter material is cut from a web-shaped starting material. The filter material area within an outer cover is interspersed with fine particles that are present in said area in at least partially unbound form. A cutting knife cuts through the filter material that is placed on an anvil during cutting while a pressure is exerted that acts upon the material to be cut in an approximately perpendicular relation thereto. In order to make the method more efficient, the severing cut is made in an area which is soaked with a liquid that solidifies under pressure shortly before the severing cut is made.
