An annotation based development platform for asynchronous web services (104) is described. In one embodiment, the developer expresses logic offered by th e web service using a standard programming language augmented with declarative annotations specifying preferences for exploring that logic as an asynchrono us web service (104). At compile time, an enhanced compiler (506) analyzes the annotated source file (502) and automatically generates the mechanisms (508, 509, 510) required to expose its functionality as an asynchronous web servic e (104).
