A carrier particle latex for assay reagents which is usable for assaying biosamples having concentrations in a wide range in an immunoserologic examination and can be stably stored for long; and an assay reagent comprisi ng the latex. The latex contains carrier particles made of a copolymer of a polymerizable monomer having a phenyl group with a polymerizable monomer having both a phenyl group and a sulfonic acid salt, wherein the carrier particles have a content of surface sulfo groups of 0.005 to 0.7 ~mol/m2 and an average particle diameter of 0.01 to 1.5 ~m.
