The aim of the invention is to permit a particularly reliable operation of a data processing system, even with frequent specification modifications. To achieve this, the invention discloses a method for processing data of a data processing system (1), comprising a plurality of data processing units (2), operator units and observation units (4), which are interconnected by means of a data transmission unit (6), whereby a respective data processing programme (8) with corresponding function modules (FB1 to FBn) and data modules (DB1 to DBn) is implemented in the data processing units (2). At least one identifier (K, KE, KI) for the function modules and data modules is stored in a respective conversion table (10) belonging to each data processing unit (2). According to the invention, a) when an external data processing unit (2) accesses a data module (DB1 to DBn) and/or a function module (FB1 to FBn) of another data processing unit (2), the conversion table (10) mediates in such a way that an initiation of the relevant data module (DB1 to DBn) and/or function module (FB1 to FBn) is executed by means of the external data processing unit (2) using an external identifier (KE) that characterises said access, b) the external identifier (KE) is converted into an internal identifier (KI) that is stored for said external identifier (KE) using the conversion table (10), c) if the internal identifier (KI) exists for the relevant external identifier (KE), the processing of the data module (DB1 to DBn) and/or the function module (FB1 to FBn) of the relevant data processing unit (2) is executed, or alternatively remains undone.
