The cladding elements are inserted in specially formed marginal strips (6,9) which have U-shaped longitudinal grooves (7) whose width is such that only a very slight clearance of 0.1 to 0.2 mm exists in relation to the inserted cladding element. The marginal strips are profiled differently according to the type of cladding and its purpose and where necessary can have more than one groove. The marginal strips can be specifically designed for use with steps, balconies and ventilation systems.
