[Also in Division H5] In the irradiation of units of material such as food products, the units 32 are passed into the shielded chamber 22 from a roller conveyer 52 and around a slab-shaped source 26 on a predetermined path, being stopped for short periods of time at a number of stations for irradiation. The units 32 are each loaded into the chamber 22 by means of a loading breech slide 36, a unit being raised into the loading aperture 40 of the slide by an hydraulically operated pusher 48, on part 56 of the roller track.
