Pure water is produced by spraying hot saline water from nozzles 7 down packed tower 1 up which air (or other inert gas) is flowing from inlet 10, and passing the mixture of air and water-vapour leaving the top of the tower to condenser 2 where the watervapour is condensed. The condensate (purified water) is collected in tank 16. Condenser 2 is cooled by saline water; and part of the cooling water, leaving the condenser, is mixed with the brine, withdrawn from the base of tower 1, in order to form the feed for nozzles 7. As shown, tower 1 is associated with a multistage flash evaporator. Raw water is pumped through the cooling-coil 5 of condenser 2, and some of it is then discharged through pipe 17 while the remainder passes through the condenser pipe 20 of evaporators 19a, 19n. Some of the heated water is passed to the nozzles 7 of tower 1, while the remainder is pumped, together with some of the brine from evaporator 19n, through pipe 22 and the cooling-pipes of the condensers of evaporators 18a .. 18n. The water, leaving the cooling pipe of evaporator 18a, passes through heater 24 and is then introduced into evaporator 18a. Some of the brine from the last evaporator stage is pumped through pipe 25 to nozzles 7. The condensate formed in the condensers of the flash evaporator is pumped through pipe 27 to tank 16. In alternative embodiments, the water to be evaporated may be heated by passing it through the jacket of a Diesel engine (on a ship), or through a heater associated with a steam driven electric generation plant.
