[Also in Division A4] A pivotal joint for a folding bed or other article comprises two pivot members 1, 2 (Figs. 2, 6) pivotally connected at 5, 7 respectively to a plate 6, the member 2 having a locking element 12, which co-operates with a counter member 10 on the member 1 to lock the joint in various positions, and a supporting surface 13 which, during pivotal movement, slides along the inner or outer face of a contact surface 14 on the member 1. When applied to a folding bed the members 1 and 2 constitute the central portion and head rest, respectively, and a leg member 3 is pivotally connected at 4 to the member 1. In the folded position the members 2 and 3 lie parallel to the member 1 as shown in chain-dotted lines in Fig. 2. To unfold the bed the leg member 3 is first swivelled to its operative position, slightly beyond the vertical, and the member 2 is then rotated in an anti-clockwise direction and turns about the pivot 7 until its supporting surface 13 strikes a lug 16 of a control lever 8 pivotally mounted at 5. The control lever cannot rotate in the clockwise direction owing to a stop 17 on the member 1, and consequently the rotation of the member 2 about the pivot 7 is arrested and the member, together with the plate 6 and control lever 8, begins to turn about the pivot 5, the supporting surface 13 passing inside the contact surface 14 on the member 1 while the locking element 12 remains clear of the counter member 10. On approaching the lowest position of use a lug 19 on the control lever 8 abuts a stop 18 on the member 1 and the member 2 then rotates again about the pivot 7 to bring the locking element 12 into engagement with the member 10. The member 2 can now be rotated upwards again, and rotates firstly about the pivot 7, until the surfaces 13 and 14 abut, and then about the pivot 5, re-engagement of the locking element with the member 10 being obtained by exerting a slight downward pressure on the member 2. Should a person sit on the member 1, thus sharply tensioning the fabric overlay (not shown) the tendency of the member 2 to swing sharply in a clockwise direction will be arrested by the engagement of the surfaces 13 and 14. The plate 6 is provided with an arcuate edge portion 21 which engages a corresponding groove 20 in the leg member 3 to lock the latter in its operative position, the engagement taking place while the member 2 is being rotated from its folded to its operative position. In the embodiment shown the locking element 12 is formed on the two lateral walls of the member 2 and two counter members 10 and plates 6 are provided, but it is possible for some purposes (e.g. display stands) to have two members 2 or 3 each having only one locking element 12 or groove 20 respectively. In a modification, Fig. 5, the separate counter members 10 are dispensed with, the side walls of the member 1 being inwardly recessed at 10<SP>1</SP> to make wedging engagement with the correspondingly shaped locking element 12. |
