The apparatus (1) has a base plate (7) which is supported on the ground surface (5) by support struts (3). A drive or impeller device (9) is held on the base plate (7) essentially perpendicular to the plate. The drive device drives a sample taking probe (11) through an opening (13) in the base plate (7) into the ground (15). The base plate may have several, preferably equidistant openings for probes.
