Silicon compounds represented by the general formula (1) and having an ability to initiate the polymerization of polymerizable monomers; and polymers produced by using the same: (1) wherein A<sp>1</sp> is a group having an ability to initiate the polymerization of a monomer, preferably a group bearing haloalkylphenyl, a group bearing an MgBr group, or a group bearing a dithiocarbamate group; R<sp>1</sp> is C<sb>2−10</sb> alkyl; R<sp>2</sp> and R<sp>3</sp> are each independently C<sb>1−8</sb> alkyl, phenyl, or cyclohexyl; n is an integer of 2 to 30; e is 0 or 1; a is an integer of 1 to 2n; and b and c are each an integer of 0 to (2n−1), with the proviso that a, b and c satisfy the relationship: a + b + c = 2n.
