PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a simply and economically producible alkenyl-containing polymer excellent in weather resistance, light resistance, heat resistance and hydrolytic resistance. SOLUTION: This vinyl polymer is characterized by having at least one alkenyl group and a sulfur atom in the molecule and having 3,000-5,000,000 number average molecular weight measured by gel permeation chromatography and <=2 molecular-weight distribution measured by gel permeation chromatography. The method for producing the polymer comprises polymerizing a vinyl monomer in the presence of a compound having a thiocarbonylthio structure, converting the thiocarbonylthio group in the obtained vinyl polymer to a mercapto group or a mercaptide group and introducing the alkenyl group by utilizing the mercapto group or the mercaptide group.
