PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method with which a heterocyclic compound represented by general formula (I) and/or general formula (I)' can be efficiently produced by a short process. SOLUTION: A reaction is carried out in the presence of a metal catalyst to form a heterocyclic compound represented by general formula (I) and/or the general formula (I)' (R<1> , R<2> , R<3> , R<4> , and R<5> are each a hydrogen atom or a univalent substituent group or an atomic group in which two of these groups are mutually bonded to form a ring; X is an oxygen atom, a nitrogen atom, a sulfur atom, or a selenium atom; when X is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or a selenium atom, R<3> does not exist).
