PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized and low-price encoder capable of being positioned and assembled easily with excellent repeatability with a comparatively simple structure, and its mounting method. SOLUTION: Concerning this encoder, the encoder body is mounted on a measuring object 2. The encoder is constituted so that the encoder body has a code plate unit 3 and an encoder unit 101 for reading the code of the code plate unit 3, and that the encoder unit 101 has a positioning means for performing positioning in contact with a cylindrical projection part formed around a rotary shaft 11 of the measuring object 2.
