PURPOSE: A still image reproducing device of a DVCR, RLC coding format and coding method are provided to exchange the number of length bits of a run length code with the number of color bits to process them so as to improve resolution of a desired still image. CONSTITUTION: A still image reproducing device of a DVCR includes an RLC decompressing unit(10) and a memory(20). The RLC decompressing unit receives a compressed composite video signal coded in RLC coding format to output only an RLC compressed video signal and decompress the RLC compressed video signal into RGB video signals. The memory stores the RLC compressed video signal generated from the RLC decompressing unit. When the RLC decompressing unit receives a still image signal, the RLC decompressing unit does not accept a compressed composite video signal and reads only RLC compressed video signal of one picture finally stored in the memory to decompress the read signal into RGB video signals.
