<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome a problem in an engine having a catalyst converter having a three-way catalyst layer on the surface of an HC adsorbing layer wherein distortion temperature of HC is lower than an activity starting tempera ture of the three-way catalyst layer and thus distorted partial HC is discharged without oxidation in an activating process of the catalyst. SOLUTION: The catalyst converter is provided with a heat transfer suppressing means comprising an intermediate layer or the like for suppressing heat transfer from the three-way catalyst layer to the HC adsorbing layer. Exhaust temperature is controlled so that the three-way catalyst layer reaches an activity temperature before the HC adsorbing layer reaches the HC distortion starting temperature when the three-way catalyst layer does not reach the activity temperature in cold starting time of the engine.</p> |
