PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating blast furnace, which can permit elevation of the Al2 O3 content of slag, without deteriorating the fluidity of the slag. SOLUTION: In the operation of blast furnace in which a slag containing Al2 O3 16.5% or more and MgO 5% or more, is discharged from a tap hole, when the frequency of iron tapping per productivity (times/(t/day/m<3> )) has increased to 0.5 or more, (a) the MgO content of the discharged slag is increased to more than that of the time when the frequency of tapping per productivity (time/(t/day/m<3> )) has not been increased to 0.5 or more, and (b) lowering the basicity (CaO content/SiO2 content) of the discharged slag is lowered to less than that of the time when the frequency of tapping per productivity (time/(t/ day/m<3> )) has not increased to 0.5 or more.
