PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal refining method particularly useful with a basic oxygen steelmaking process. SOLUTION: The refining oxygen is provided into the furnace headspace surrounded by a shroud including oxygen and inert gas, during an initial period, and refining oxygen is provided into the furnace headspace surrounded by a flame shroud during a subsequent period.
