PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surveying apparatus equipped with a convenient level prevented from breaking. SOLUTION: A leveling rod 11 is expansibly and contractibly formed from a cylindrical outer lengthy member 12 and a cylindrical inside lengthy member 13 movably fitted into the lengthy member 12, and the level 14 is mounted on and supported by the inside lengthy member 13. The level 14 is provided so as to be protrudable and retreatable between a first position where it is housed in the inside lengthy member 13 and a second position where it is protruded out of the inside lengthy member 13. The level 14 is engagingly locked and held in the first and second positions, respectively.
