PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling heat treating atmosphere, which can improve the efficiency of heat treatment and the quality of a material to be heat-treated by controlling the heat treating atmosphere to an optimum state, when heat-treating the material by introducing an enriching gas into a furnace. SOLUTION: A heat treating furnace 1 is preliminaly made to have a CO2 sensor 2 for detecting CO2 concentration in a gas atmosphere in the furnace, on the outside of the furnace, and an oxygen sensor 3 for detecting oxygen concentration in the gas atmosphere in the furnace on the inside of the furnace. After starting the introduction of the enriching gas 7, the introducing amount of the enriching gas is controlled so that, by calculating an apparent carbon potential CP1 based on a CO2 concentration measured with the CO2 sensor 2, and an apparent carbon potential CP2 based on an oxygen concentration measured with the oxygen sensor 3, determining the differenceΔCP=(CP2 -CP1 ), and adjusting the introducing amount of the enriching gas 7, theΔCP is closer to a predetermined value.
