PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for treating a swelling medium in ink jet printing with a medium or heat immediately before printing to accelerate permeation of ink while reducing aggregation at a low cost. SOLUTION: The method for improving the print quality in a printer applying ink to a swelling medium (10) comprises a step for applying a treating fluid useful for accelerating absorption of ink by the swelling medium (10) to the swelling medium, and a step for applying ink to the swelling medium (10) wherein the ink is applied to the swelling medium (10) within about 1 minute after the treating fluid is applied.
