PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the barrier rib leaping movement of particles occurring when an electophoretic display device is installed vertically or when substrates are bent, and to display stable image. SOLUTION: In the electrophoretic display device having a pair of substrates, electrodes formed on the substrates, a dispersion medium charged between the substrates, charged migration particles dispersed in the dispersion medium and barrier ribs formed on one substrate, provided in contact with the other substrate and dividing the charged migration particles and the dispersion medium into small sections, the other substrate on which the barrier ribs are not formed has a soft surface layer on the side coming in contact with the barrier ribs.
